Surface and volume changes in the lens during accommodation.

چکیده
I was excited by the results presented in the excellent paper by Sheppard et al. showing a 2.3% increase in lens volume and a decrease of 1.82% in surface during accommodation in human volunteers. I was very gratified that they acknowledged that we had predicted similar changes in human lens volume and surface based on mathematical modeling of human lens dimensions, using the Pappus theorem as well as our experimentally induced changes in lens dimensions of isolated cow lenses under conditions mimicking accommodation. Their acknowledgment of our work is especially gratifying for us because members of the “accommodation group” had received our findings and predictions with skepticism. I hope that the publication by Sheppard et al. serves to encourage a reevaluation of the changes that occur during accommodation. However, there is a point of ours that was dismissed by the authors, who simply indicated that the changes in lens volume may be due to compression of the lens bag contents. They did not consider the possibility that the change in volume could be fluid exiting and re-entering the lens bag. The lens capsule is very permeable to water, as shown by numerous “osmotic” experiments. We have also recently shown a relationship between the osmotic and mechanical forces of accommodation. Could the authors comment as to why they did not consider our suggested interpretation to explain the volume changes in their publication? Oscar A. Candia

Development of an Accommodation-Dependent Eye Model and Studying the Effects of Accommodation on Electron and Proton Dose Conversion Coefficients
Introduction International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has provided a comprehensive discussion on threshold dose for radiation-induced cataract in ICRP publication 116. Accordingly, various parts of the eye lens have different radio-sensitivities. Recently, some studies have been performed to develop a realistic eye model with the aim of providing accurate estimation of fluence...
متن کاملSurface change of the mammalian lens during accommodation.
Classical theories suggest that the surface area of the crystalline lens changes during accommodation while the lens volume remains constant. Our recent work challenged this view by showing that the lens volume decreases as the lens flattens during unaccommodation. In this paper we investigate 1) the magnitude of changes in the surface of the in vitro isolated cow lens during simulated accommod...
متن کاملThree-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging of the phakic crystalline lens during accommodation.
PURPOSE To quantify changes in crystalline lens curvature, thickness, equatorial diameter, surface area, and volume during accommodation using a novel two-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) paradigm to generate a complete three-dimensional crystalline lens surface model. METHODS Nineteen volunteers, aged 19 to 30 years, were recruited. T(2)-weighted MRIs, optimized to show fluid-fil...
متن کاملVolume change of the ocular lens during accommodation.
During accommodation, mammalian lenses change shape from a rounder configuration (near focusing) to a flatter one (distance focusing). Thus the lens must have the capacity to change its volume, capsular surface area, or both. Because lens topology is similar to a torus, we developed an approach that allows volume determination from the lens cross-sectional area (CSA). The CSA was obtained from ...
متن کاملComparisons between pharmacologically and Edinger-Westphal-stimulated accommodation in rhesus monkeys.
PURPOSE Accommodation results in increased lens thickness and lens surface curvatures. Previous studies suggest that lens biometric accommodative changes are different with pharmacological and voluntary accommodation. In this study, refractive and biometric changes during Edinger-Westphal (EW) and pharmacologically stimulated accommodation in rhesus monkeys were compared. METHODS Accommodatio...
